Kalua Pig (Smoked Shredded Pork)
Poi (Starchy Polynesian food paste made from taro root called kalo)
The story of kalo starts with Wakea the Sky Father, and Papa, Earth Mother. They had a child together, Hoʻohōkūkalani. Hoʻohōkūkalani was beautiful and conceived a child with Wakea. When their baby, a son, was born stillborn Hoʻohōkūkalani was devastated. He was named Hāloa, meaning long, eternal breath. The kūpuna or elders whispered, "the child looks like a root." Hāloa was wrapped in kapa, and buried in a lauhala, then into the Earth. Hoʻohōkūkalani was heartbroken over the loss of her son. She would cry over Hāloa's grave, watering him with her tears. Not long after, a plant with a long stalk and heart shaped leaf began to grow. This was the first kalo plant.
