  • Poi (Starchy Polynesian food paste made from taro root called kalo)

    • The story of kalo starts with Wakea the Sky Father, and Papa, Earth Mother. They had a child together, Hoʻohōkūkalani. Hoʻohōkūkalani was beautiful and conceived a child with Wakea. When their baby, a son, was born stillborn Hoʻohōkūkalani was devastated. He was named Hāloa, meaning long, eternal breath. The kūpuna or elders whispered, "the child looks like a root." Hāloa was wrapped in kapa, and buried in a lauhala, then into the Earth. Hoʻohōkūkalani was heartbroken over the loss of her son. She would cry over Hāloa's grave, watering him with her tears.
